There are an infinite number of angelic beings in God’s kingdom and they all have different roles to serve and help humanity. The more you can understand who they are and how they can aid you, the more useful they become in your life. God created these messengers of light to bridge the communication between heaven and earth. Learn about the different hierarchies of the angelic realm and discover how many divine helpers are ready to assist you on your journey.
Historic Hierarchy of the Angels
The angels do not rank themselves or see themselves as a hierarchy. It was by human design and the churches that the angels were ordered in this way.
The various religions found this hierarchical arrangement necessary for several reasons. The Jewish patriarchs were producing angels swiftly and the Catholic Church was naming more and more angels. Even the great St. Augustine complained that angels “breed like flies.” There were so many angels, and in order to clear the confusion and arrange them in some kind of sequential order, a hierarchy system was formed.
In the Old Testament there were only two orders of angels, the Seraphim and Cherubim. Then it is said that Dionysius the Areopagite, a disciple of St. Paul, added seven more in the New Testament: Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels.
When researched, there are hundreds of angels’ names recorded, but there are also variations of these names. For example, the archangel Raziel is also known as Akraziel, Saraqael, Suriel, Galisur, N’Zuriel, and Uriel. The seraph Semyaza’s variations are Samiaza, Shemhazai, Amezyarak, Azael, Azaziel, and Uzza. Metatron had a mystery name, Bizbul, but he had over a 100 other names as well.
The following are the nine orders of angels from the New Testament. They are arranged according to their importance.
THE FIRST TRIAD (THE HIGHEST TRIAD)
Seraphim are the highest order of God’s angelic servants and sit closest to the throne of God. They are of pure light and because they are so bright they may be hard for humans to see. Angels in the Seraphim choir are Michael, Seraphiel, Jehoel, Kemuel, Metatron, Uriel, and Nathanael.
Cherubim are the guardians of the fixed stars, keepers of the heavenly records, and bestowers of knowledge. They are the angels of harmony, protection, and wisdom and they channel positive energy from the divine. The Cherubim choir consists of Gabriel, Cherubiel, Ophaniel, Raphael, and Zophiel.
Thrones are the angels who bring God’s justice to earth. They create and send positive energy to the earth and all its inhabitants. Orifiel, Zaphkiel, Zabkiel, Jolhiel (or Zophiel), and Raziel are in the Thrones choir.
THE SECOND TRIAD (MIDDLE TRIAD)
Dominions are the divine leaders who regulate the angels’ duties. They are the angels of intuition and wisdom and the majesty of God is manifested through them. The Dominions choir angels are Zadkiel, Hashmal, Zacharael, and Muriel.
Virtues are known as “the miracle angels.” They are sent to earth to help those that want to make the impossible into the possible. They are here to help those that feel called to serve and bring harmony and peace into the world. The Virtues choir angels are Uzziel, Gabriel, Michael, Peliel, Barbiel, Sabriel, Haniel, Hamaliel, and Tarshish.
Powers are the defenders and protectors of the world. They keep track of human history and they are the organizers of world religions. The Powers choir includes Camael, Raphael, and Verchiel.
THE THIRD TRIAD (LOWEST TRIAD)
Principalities are the protectors of politics and religion. You can call on them to help with leadership problems and human rights. Angels in the Principalities choir are Nisroc, Naniel, Requel, Cerviel, and Amael.
Archangels rule over all the angels. They enjoy human contact and they can be there simultaneously for all of humanity. So even if everyone is praying for Archangel Michael’s help at the same time, he can be there for all. The Archangels are Ariel, Azrael, Chamuel, Gabriel, Haniel, Jeremiel, Jophiel, Metatron, Michael, Raguel, Raphael, Raziel, Sandalphon, Ureil, and Zadkiel.
Angels are placed at the bottom of the hierarchy. They are the messengers of God working the closest with humanity. There are many different kinds of angels in this choir, including the guardian angels. Their names are numerous and varied and you will find more information about these angels and their roles later on in the book.
It is inferred from various sources that the higher orders of angels — Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions — are the ones who constantly praise God and do not leave heaven to perform His chores on earth.
Remember the hierarchy system is arranged by human design, not by the angels. If you look throughout scripture it gives very little support to the angels, let alone hierarchical arrangements of them.
Some modern religionists have taken issue with the very idea of angelic hierarchies. One, philosopher Mortimer Adler, finds such speculation “highly entertaining.” And Christian evangelist writer Timothy Jones, in Celebration of Angels, states flatly:
Dionysius simply had no way to determine if his nine-fold ordering was literally true. Nor do we. Even Paul the apostle, who claimed to have been caught up into the “third heaven” (2 Corinthians 12:2), hinted that such things are not to be told…. Indeed, in Scripture, we gain only glimpses and fragments of how the angels might be organized…. However tantalizing the recorded glimpses of angels in Scripture are, they are ultimately just that: glimpses. We can take great comfort, however, in knowing that populating the heavenly spheres are creatures so great they boggle and frustrate our every attempt to pin them down.
Choose to use the hierarchy system as a guide and a tool to better understand who the angels are and what their different roles are in helping out humanity.
Guardian angels are among the angels in the lowest triad and they are the divine helpers closest to all living beings. Everyone has at least two guardian angels that were gifted by God. They will be with you from the time of birth to the time you pass from this earth plane. Your guardian angels are your personal angels and they are not assigned to anyone but you.
A poll published in Time magazine revealed that 69 percent of Americans believe in angels and 46 percent of that group believe they have a personal guardian angel.
Your guardian angel is here to assist you in every aspect of your life. They can make your life easier if you let them. Remember, your guardian angels love you with the same unconditional love as God, and there is nothing you could ever do or say that would change this love. Take time out of your busy schedule to pray with your guardian angels. Ask them for the help you need. Then listen, feel, and pay attention to how they answer your prayers. They know you very well and they know exactly how to get your attention.
Even though the ascended masters are not mentioned in the hierarchy, it is important to point them out. They are God’s divine helpers and they play their role in helping humanity evolve. These beings of light walked before you on this earth. During their lifetimes they were great teachers. They have now ascended into heaven and their role is to help all those that need them.
Among these great beings and teachers are the Blessed Mother Mary, Jesus, Quan Yin, Buddha, Moses, Mohammed, Serapis Bey, Saint Theresa, and Saint Francis.
The ascended masters are well aware of your prayers and concerns. They have compassion and understanding of what you go through as human beings because they walked the journey themselves. Just like the angels, they honor your free will and free choice, so you need to ask for their help. Trust that they will be by your side, instantaneously, ready to assist you in unconditional love. They are very powerful enlightened beings and they have the ability to manifest healing and miracles into your life. Invite them into your life and witness the magic that begins to unfold.
The fairies are also not mentioned in the hierarchy, but they have their importance as well because they are the angels of nature. Their vibration is very connected to the earth and their place in the hierarchy is in between the angels and humans.
The fairies are most prominently found in nature and among flower gardens. If you wish to connect with them and ask for their help, spend time outdoors. Talk to them and share your requests. Ask the fairies to clear your energy and raise your vibration so you can attract only good into your life. Then listen and connect with their playful wisdom and allow them to guide you.
Fairies are very playful and creative and they love to hang around children. Because of this children are more likely to see them, but they also like to assist adults, too. They will nudge you to invite more play into your life, especially if your time is overloaded with work and family responsibilities. They love to play the role of matchmaker, and if you are looking for a soul mate they will help you find one. They love creativity and will provide inspiration to help you with any project: designing your gardens, your home, or any other creative endeavor. The fairies can play a powerful role in helping you manifest your dreams into reality. Ask them to gather around you and give them a wish list of what you want. Then ask them to show you that the impossible is possible. Be open to their miracles of manifestation and trust that they will joyfully help you. Then pay attention and watch the magic unfold.
The fairies ask you to be conscious of taking care of the earth. They will team with you even more when they see you picking up trash that others have left behind. They ask you to use products that are environmentally conscious and to do what you can to save the earth. Just as you need help from the angels, the fairies ask for your help to take care of Mother Earth.
Loved Ones in Spirit
When discussing vibration, those that have died and transitioned into the spirit world resonate somewhere between the fairies and human beings. This is important to mention when reflecting on vibration and the hierarchy of the angels. When you raise your vibration and connect your energy with the angelic realm, you will receive loving, supportive guidance that’s directed from God. When you communicate with loved ones who have passed you may still be communicating with certain aspects of their personalities. For example, let’s say that you want guidance from a particular relative in spirit about buying a new home. If he or she had been conservative in life and liked to save money, that personality trait would still be there. It might influence the guidance given.
Angels of Birth and Death
There are special “birth angels” who helped you birth into this life experience, and there are also “death angels” that help you journey back home when it’s time.
The ascended masters’ vibration and their place on the hierarchy is right below the archangels and above the angels. Just like the archangels, they have the ability to be with everyone simultaneously so they can serve all humans with great love and care.
Many people believe that the just-born infant is born with an “angel twin,” the guardian angel that accompanies it throughout life. Others believe that there are special birth angels, that attend the birth to make sure that all is well and then they depart for other birthings. The author of Angels in Action, Robert H. Kirven, asserts that “spiritual protection of infants is typical of angelic occupations in that it is a kind of service [and that] angels have a special affection for newborn children.” Kirven goes on to say that other angels and spirits replace these earliest guardians when infants grow out of infancy and into childhood. The question as to whether the first angel assigned to a child is the lifetime guardian angel has never been definitively answered. Kirven bases his opinion on his extensive study of the works of the eighteenth-century scientist-turned-mystic Emanuel Swedenborg.
Angels also attend death. Emanuel Swedenborg, who wrote prolifically about angels, gives an account of how he first encountered “some of the kindest and most profoundly loving of all angels,” in what we would today call a near-death experience. He explains that people “wake up” after dying, gradually becoming aware of angels at their heads. These “death angels” are apparently able to communicate with persons who have just died and make them feel peaceful, safe, and happily welcomed to their new state. The transition period, whether it is easy for the person that has passed or difficult (for some resist believing they are dead), is supervised by these special angels.
Laylah is an angel of the night, and his name comes from the Hebrew word meaning sleep. Laylah watches over newborns and helps them move through the adjustment of being in a physical body.
How comforting is it to know that God sends these angels of birth and death to help you transition during these challenging times. It once again confirms how loved you are and that you will never, ever be alone.
There are many questions asked about the concept of fallen angels. Angels glow in the energy of pure light and love. They communicate only messages of love and encouragement. They always act and guide from a place of unconditional love.
Fallen angels are not a creation of God’s love. They are a manifestation of man’s fear. When someone is entangled in the energy of fear they are more likely to experience these dark beings. They are usually reflections of what has been programmed in their mind as evil, maybe the devil, Satan, and any other scary apparition.
There is also another form of fallen angels to be aware of called earthbound spirits. These are deceased humans who are hanging around the earth plane. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but most often people refer to them as ghosts. Again, if you are bothered by these earthbound spirits call upon Archangel Michael and ask him to escort them back home.
If you would like to avoid these fear-based manifestations, keep your thoughts focused on love and continually surround yourself with the presence of the angels.
