oilThere seems to be a subtle difference between those who understand the true value of aromatherapy or essential oils and those who truly incorporate it into their daily lives. Although Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils (which are highly volatile liquids obtained from various parts of many plants), it also involves additional substances that are, well, aromatic!

This subject is based on the concept that certain aromas have significant healing and therapeutic benefits that may be physical , psychological or spiritual.

Whatever the benefits are, when one is plainly annoyed with the challenges life throws at her , She needs a helping hand . In this case , Aromatherapy, I believe , Plays a vital role.

1 . Prepare a STEAM INHALATION

In order to to this , you will need a large bowl and a towel. Fill the bowl with hot steaming water and pour 4 or 5 drops of your favourite essential oil or a blend. In order to understand the effects of various essential oils you can refer to my other lens ” A Beginner’s Guide to essential Oils” .

Lavender is your best bet if you have no idea where to begin. It is a very soothing and calming aroma and helps you relax and de-stress.

Start inhaling the vapors from the bowl , with the towel over your head in order to trap the steam . Do this for 10 to 15 minutes or for as long as you are comfortable. Great for unwinding after a stressful day !!

2. Use as Air Freshener

Mix a few drops of you favourite essential oil with some water on a spray bottle and shake well. Spray as you would spray a regular air freshener in your living room and other places.

You can also use an essential oil diffuser to spread the aroma at an even pace.

3. Make a new Mouthwash

Oils such as myrrh, rose, and tea tree are good for gingivitis, while cypress and tea tree oils can help heal and prevent bleeding gums. Myrrh, basil, bergamot, and tea tree oils are helpful for healing mouth ulcers.

Take 4 or 5 drops of tea tree oil and mix it with distilled water in a cup. Add a teaspoon of alcohol and a couple of drops of peppermint oil. This is a very good recipe for those suffering from gum problems. Use as you would use a regular mouthwash taking care not to swallow it.

4. Enjoy a Scented Bath

Mix a few (say 10) drops of aromatherapy oils in a tub full of warm water. Soak in the bath for as long as you want to. Let go of all your troubles and just ENJOY !!

5 . Hot and Cold Compresses

Compresses can relieve pain and reduce swelling and inflammation.

Hot compresses are best for chronic conditions, particularly for backaches, arthritis, toothaches, and earaches.

Cold compresses are an important first-aid measure for sprains; they also help to relieve headaches.

Fill a bowl with very hot water or with iced water as required.Mix in a few drops of chamomile (or your preferred oil). Dip a clean cloth into the solution and wring out excess before applying the wet cloth to the affected area. Rinse and repeat.

6. Eliminate odours in your Kitchen

Fill the kitchen area with the aroma of spices such as Clove, Cinnamon, and Vanilla.

Simmer a few drops of the essential oils of Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and other spices.

Geranium oil sprinkled throughout the home creates a warm, cheerful, and inviting mood.

7 . Get Your Zzz’s

Chamomile, Lavender, Neroli and Marjoram are known to promote restful sleep . Those who have trouble falling asleep can usually benefit by placing one or two drops of these oils on their pillow.

Chamomile tea is also good for insomniacs.

8 . Relieve Indigestion

If you have an upset stomach due to indigestion , use 2 drops of peppermint essential oil in a cup of warm water and sip slowly. An easy cure for a troublesome issue!

9. Use as Carpet Deodorant

Add 10 drops of essential oil to a box baking soda and let set for a day. Then sprinkle over the carpets in your home. Let it set for about 30 minutes and then vacuum.

10 . Use for disinfecting surfaces

Add 2-3 drops of lemon essential oil to water and spray counter tops to sterilize them. Soak your dishrag overnight in that lemon water to disinfect and kill germs.
